Hi! My name is Caleb Schmerge. I am a junior at the University of Wyoming. I am a Veterinary and Animal Sciences major, in the Pre-Vet option. I started my undergraduate study in Computer Engineering, but after adopting my Siberian Husky, Aspen, I found that I was in headed down the wrong career path. In 2 years I will be done with my undergraduate study and be able to apply to Vet School, hopefully at either Washington State University or Colorado State University.

Once I have completed my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine I plan to become a sled dog Vet. I intend to spend the first several years of my practice in Southern Wyoming/Northern Colorado. During that time I hope to get on my feet and further my knowledge of Veterinary Medicine. Once my feet are good and wet I plan to move to Alaska, where I can work in a clinic focused on sled dogs.

When I am out of school I want to further my pack from the current one Siberian Husky to a total of 8. Aspen and I are already in love with harness activies (mushing). Once I have a full team I plan to harness train them all and sled all around Alaska (maybe even in the Iditarod one day).

For now Aspen lives at home with my parents. She stays there with my mom’s Great Pyrenees, Frisco. Frisco was the first puppy I ever was around. While stressful, he was a joy to raise. It is incredible how quickly and drastically he changed. Also at home are my mom’s two horses – Smokey and Ben. Smokey is a gentle and loving Belgian draft horse. Ben is a beautiful Quarter Horse cross. Pictures of all of these critters can be found under the “Pets” link.
